This exhibition is organized in memory of Peter Simensky by his friends, Cara Levine, Garrick Imatani, and Jeanne Gerrity. Generous support is provided by Stephanie Snyder, and the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College. A booklet designed by Priscilla Vanneuville will be available at the gallery and includes essays by Cara Levine, Jeanne Gerrity, Glen Helfand, Garrick Imatani, Jess Perlitz, and Stephanie Snyder, will be available at the gallery.
An excerpt from Levine’s essay includes this description of Peter's work: “Peter arrived at these much loved Pyrite Radio works after a decades-long obsession with currency—its physicality (connection to materiality/earth) and ethereality (connection to time and society/air). These qualities can be traced through many works over the years. The pyrite stone not only emulates the glitter of gold as a foil for wealth and power, but displays a unique and otherworldly capacity as a transmitter of radio waves. And it is this capacity that makes both the works, and Peter's excitement for them, come alive. What would this stone transmit through to us next? As a maker, he had a brilliant eye for materials and a light touch with composition and construction. Stepping into Peter’s studio was like drifting into a glitter cloud, where each sparkle was lovingly placed, gazed upon, and replaced, until it was just right…”
