THE SPACE
OUR VISION
and HISTORY
In 2022, artist, and LA native, Cara Levine, moved her sculpture studio to 6042 Monte Vista St., a couple of blocks from her home on Outlook Ave. and about 10 blocks from the birthplace of her paternal grandfather in 1912. This building, likely to have been built in the 1950s, is an icon in Highland Park. It has been a local laundromat as well as the first LA home to the Audubon Society. The building sits across from the St. Ignatius Church on one side and the LADWP on the other. After establishing her wood shop and studio in the back of the building, Levine was able to reopen the storefront space in the summer of 2023.
The name Outlook Is___ Projects references the Magic 8 Ball, a mainstay toy from an 80s/90s childhood, offering ever-allusive answers to life’s biggest questions. Levine has always understood art to be a tool for communication - communicating the ethereal, the abstract, the plain and simple, and everything in between.
Though in practice, this space and what it will bring to the neighborhood, is still unfolding and yet to be determined, the vision is big:
highlight emerging and underrepresented artists
exhibit experimental and socially driven work
collaborate with local businesses and makers
offer short-term artist residencies
cultivate a home for community
